Healthcare Projects

AK Design have considerable experience of working within Healthcare establishments. We have specialist expertise in Mental Health and Secure Psychiatric environments. Our projects include Refurbishment and New Build schemes including addressing anti-ligature and infection control issues and designing to include requirements of Hospital Building Notes (HBN) and Hospital Technical Memorandum (HTM) standards.

All of our projects are scrutinised to accord with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). AK Design have recent experience in providing complete design services for Adult Psychiatric Wards, PICU Wards, Psychiatric Secure Forensic Services Wards, Mental Health Day Hospital, Section 136 & Seclusion Rooms and Community Mental Health Day Centres. Our other recent Health Service projects include schemes for Primary Care Trusts including a Geriatric Respite Care Ward and refurbishment and extensions to Primary Care Health Centres.

We have been employed by Health Trusts on a framework agreement or on individual appointments, acting on our own or leading an entire Design Team as Lead Consultant, AK Design have also acted as designer for Design and Build projects or as a supply chain partner whilst working directly for the Principal Supply Chain Partner or Contractor within P21 Projects.

Cumbria Villa

Contract Value: £2.5m

Contract duration: 14 months

AKDP Appointment: Architectural Services, Principal Designer, Contract Administrator

A new decant ward has been provided in an underused ward Cumbria Villa at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield. This is the first decant ward for the NHS Trust on this site to have this new facility available to them.

This allows a future long term refurbishment programme to other wards which can be decanted into Cumbria Villa for a short/medium period of time to enable these works to go ahead.

MSK Physio Block

Contract Value: Part of a £16m contract

Contract duration: 10 months

AKDP Appointment: Sub Contractor, Architectural Services

A new Physio block/ward was created following a ward move around which saw the existing female Mental Health Ward move into the newly Built Blossom Court building adjacent on site. This allowed a newly design Physio Ward to be created to the latest standards within Phase 1 of the redevelopment works at St Ann's Hospital.

Bramdean Hub

Contract Value: £870,000.00

Contract duration: 16 weeks

AKDP Appointment: Architectural Consultant, Contract Administrator and Principal Designer

Surrey and Borders Partnership Foundation Trust commissioned AK Design Partnership to facilitate the relocation of services from Ashford Hospital to Fairmead, Bramdean Hub. AKDP provided the professional services from RIBA Stages 0-7 for inception to completion. AKDP closely liaised all principles to bring a new community services into a Hub service. The refurbishment brought all services into one area with NHS office facilities.

Shannon Ward

Contract Value: £1.5m

Refurbishment of existing ground floor ward accommodation in Dennis Scott Unit Edgware Community Hospital to provide a new 15 bed en suite Psychiatric Ward requiring minor demolition and new drainage works, new partitions, decoration & wall finishes, new anti-ligature sanitaryware and doors and complete renewal of Mechanical & Electrical services.

Acorn Centre

Contract Value: £1.5m

Contract duration: 27 weeks

AKDP Appointment: Lead Consultant & Contract Administrator

A new child development centre was required by NELFT (NHS) to provide a larger specialist centre relocating many other smaller teams into one new purpose designed centre.

This involved converting a former car showroom. The provision of a new mezzanine floor area and external alterations the glazing including brise soleil and external parking and landscaping.

New internal consulting rooms, sensor room, multi use gym/sport room and first floor open plan offices, with additional secondary glazing added to improve road level noise and the energy performance of the building.

Hawthorn Restaurant & Lecture Room

Contract Value: Part of a £16m contract

Contract duration: 12 months

AKDP Appointment: Sub Contractor, Architectural Services

The creation of a new restaurant on site at St Ann's Hospital within the Phase 1 of the redevelopment works. This much needed larger restaurant replaces a much smaller restaurant that will be closed, as that part of the site has been sold off for housing so will be redeveloped.
