What was it like taking over AK Design?
It was a little daunting at first. It came at a time where I was looking to further my career and wanted to step up to a higher level. An opportunity presented itself to take over AK Design and I knew I wanted to take this challenge on. It’s been very rewarding as well as being a huge learning curve and part of that is to be constantly learning in the job on a daily basis.
How long have you been at AK Design?
10 Years on 13th May.
How does your role differ to what it was before and what accomplishments are you proud of?
Before becoming a Partner, I was a Senior Architectural Technician so was more officed based and occasionally went out on site. Now my work is very varied and involves many other aspects. These can be from checking new upcoming company legislation, meeting new clients, accounting, managing workloads, staff meetings and appraisals. Looking forward with new software and bringing other systems in place so we can maintain a competitive edge over other companies. It’s 4 years since I took over at AK Design and it’s fair to say that being able to help to bring the company in and out of the Covid Pandemic and through the other side where many companies sadly didn’t would rank as an accomplishment I’m proud of. Off course this wouldn’t have been possible without all of the hard work and dedication of everyone working at AK Design during this time.
Has your background always been in the construction industry?
Yes, after I completed my college BTEC National Diploma in Construction I completed a HND in Building Studies. I then went to work in an Architects Practice as a Junior Cad Technician. Over the years I steadily changed companies and took on more work, roles and responsibilities to achieve the level of Senior Architectural Technician prior to becoming a Partner of AK Design.
What was your first job and what was your experience?
When I was at college, I worked one day a week for a company that reupholstered furniture and made new fully fitted curtains. So often I had to go out to help install the new curtains and other items.
What did you want to work as when you were younger?
I originally wanted to become a doctor.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time in the garden, diy jobs as well as spending time with my fiancée, two daughters and Ella the Labrador.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Helpful, creative, perfectionist.
What one piece of music would you keep on repeat?
I’ve had the time of my life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes (1987) for a well know film of the decade. Lyrics to songs are a powerful thing and this song helps to remind me of all the achievements I’ve had during my life.
